Essential Questions and Activities
Essential Questions for Social Studies:
- How is the first Thanksgiving alike and different from Thanksgiving today?
- What was life for the Pilgrims like and what were they thankful for?
- What are you thankful for?
- What happens at the beginning, middle, and end of Turkey Trouble?
- Who are some of the characters in Turkey Trouble?
- Watch the TEASe "Thanksgiving: Then and Now."
- Take a virtual field trip with a partner.
- Draw and color a picture from one of the categories of the field trip (The Mayflower, Daily Life, or The Feast).
- Show the Popplet on the differences between the first feast in Plymouth and modern Thanksgiving celebrations.
- Make foldables that include pictures and labels of three differences.
- Read Turkey Trouble. Summarize the book as a class.
- Play the turkey disguise game.
- Watch the video "The First Thanksgiving" (starting at 3:47 until the end). After watching, call on students to ask what they think the Pilgrims and Native Americans were thankful for. Ask them to think about what they are thankful for.
- Students will create a collage of what they are thankful for using Microsoft Photo Gallery.
Student Product Assessment
- Watch the video from activity number five (above).
- Ask students what the Pilgrims were thankful for and what they are thankful for and write their answers in a chart on the white board.
- Teach them how to create a collage using pictures from http://www.safesearchkids.com/ and Microsoft Photo Gallery. Show them an example of how the collage should look.
- Students will create collages and meet the requirements in the rubric.
